[INSTRUCTIONS] How to Swap a NEW unlocked ECM - L5P AIO Delete Kit w/ ECM

READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE MODIFYING YOUR VEHICLE.

* THE TDN APP IS NOT REQUIRED, SIMPLY FOLLOW THE STEPS BELOW*

Overview of the L5P tuning procedure with a new ECM:

*Ensure all emissions components are installed and fully functional without error messages. The DEF tank should not be empty. For 17-19 models, ensure soot levels are below 70% before continuing*

1) We will send you all the necessary components

2) Install the latest version of VCM Suite BETA software.  Make sure to check for the latest BETA update every time you launch the software as it is frequently updated.

3) Connect the MPVi3 to your computer and open VCM Scanner

4) With the factory ECM in place, save an info log,

Instructions for creating an info log can be found here.

Next, initiate the ECM swap process (Vehicle > Controls and Special Functions > System > Replace ECM)

5) When prompted, install the new ECM. Before disconnecting the ECM, always remove the battery grounds. Be cautious when inserting the connectors into the ECM as the pins are fragile and could be damaged.

6) Continue and complete the ECM swap process within VCM Scanner

7) After the ECM swap is completed and the NEW UNLOCKED ECM is installed (or if your stock ECM has been unlocked), download the .hpt read file  (VCM Editor > Close File > Read.  Select "Read Entire" for the ECM section and "Do not read" for the TCM section. (Always read ECM & TCM separately if both are being tuned)
Then click "Read". After completion, save the file with the name "[ORDER #]__[VIN]"

7-A) If you are also replacing the TCM, repeat steps 4-7, choose "Replace TCM", follow the steps, and submit the TCM read file along with the other files/information in step 9. If you are only doing the ECM tune, proceed to step 8.

8) After saving the read file, save the info log again, instructions for creating an info log can be found here.

9) Head over to this page to complete the form, providing your email, order number, VIN, and any additional details. The completed form (on this page) will be sent to our expert tuner. After receiving the submission, the tuner will request an info log (which you can find by following the instructions on this instruction page).

10) If you reinstalled the original ECM in step 9, you can reinstall the factory ECM to keep using the vehicle in stock form.  [DO NOT REMOVE EMISSIONS SYSTEMS YET]

Once Diesel Race Parts has received your files and information, we will process the tune and send it back to you within 3-5 business days. Do not remove the emissions components before loading the delete tune; if you do so with the factory tune still on, you will encounter emissions-related messages on your dashboard and will need to reinstall the emissions to clear these messages. We are not responsible for these issues and cannot provide support for them.

Continue the process with the steps below:

11) If you reinstalled the original ECM after completing step 9, install the new ECM again, open VCM Editor, connect the MPVI3 to your laptop (not the truck), and use VCM Editor to resync the MPVI interface (Help > Resync Interface)

12) Ensure no tune file is loaded by closing the file using the Folder icon in the top left menu bar

13) Open the tune file we sent you (crtl+O) [either VATS on or off].  Now connect the MPVI to the OBD port

14) Click Write Vehicle - change the option to "Write entire" instead of "Write calibration" and confirm

15) Turn the ignition off

16) If you purchased a TCM tune, install it now using the same process; if not, start the truck and proceed with the crank relearn procedure:

16 A) Start the engine and allow the coolant temperature to rise above 170°F (This process may take some time, so be patient as not reaching the proper temp will cause failure)

16 B) Use VCM Scanner to initiate the crank relearn.  (Controls and Special Functions > Crank Relearn)

16 C) Gradually rev the engine up to fuel cutoff (4000-5000 RPM) and release. Allow the engine to return to idle, turn off the ignition for 15 seconds, then turn the ignition back on. The "crank not learned" error should no longer be present.

17) Turn off the engine, disconnect the battery ground wires, then proceed with removing the emissions components.  Always remove the ground cables before unplugging the NOX sensors and DEF tank.

18) When installing the CAN plugs, ensure they are seated properly. Improper connections can cause numerous issues, so ensure they are firmly in place. Use dielectric grease in all connectors, including open ones, and tape them up to keep them dry and free from contamination.

19) Once you’ve removed all the parts, reconnect the battery grounds and start the truck. If you followed the instructions, you should not see any emissions codes or CELs.

*Do not unplug the throttle valve*

Notes

*Always use a battery charger that can supply a steady 10 AMPs or more

**Always close any open files when launching VCM software to avoid confusion (click the Folder icon in the top left corner)

***If the VIN is not registering correctly, and tuning is complete, you can update it with VCM Scanner (Vehicle > Controls and Special Functions > System > Change VIN). Ensure the VIN is entered in all caps. If problems persist, clear DTCs via "Vehicle > Diagnostics > Clear DTCs".

****VCM Suite BETA software requires a specific version of .NET. If errors occur, check your .NET version or update it from the HP Tuners Downloads section (under the link to the BETA software)

*****Always connect the MPVI device to your computer before plugging it into the vehicle

Due to high tuning demand, expect a processing time of 1-3 business days from receiving your base files to when we send the modified file back.

We recommend that shops schedule two appointments: one for the ECM swap and info log retrieval, and another for the tune load and parts installation.

******If emissions were unplugged prior to tuning, you will likely see a Service Emissions message.  If the DEF tank was low during tuning, expect a Low DEF warning after the tune is loaded. Ensure the DEF tank has at least 1/4 full before tuning. For 17-19 models, make sure soot levels are below 70%; if not, a forced regen is required before tuning.

*******Our tuning service does not cover revisions due to incorrect files being submitted. The read file and info log should be taken from the NEW ECM. If you don’t follow these instructions and use the factory ECM, the tune will only work on that ECM, requiring either unlocking or a new tune purchase. Please follow these instructions carefully. Contact us before sending files if you need clarification.*
